Environmental Justice and Bird Banding

What is Environmental Justice?

Environmental justice refers both to a recognition that access to greenspaces and the benefits they provide is not equitable across all communities; and to a commitment towards tackling this inequity, ensuring that all communities have access to the natural world and to environmental protections and education.

A better City for birds and people

Communities with good access to greenspaces have been scientifically linked to lower crime rates, less noise and air pollution, and even more abundant options for healthy eating. Baltimore has an abundance of parks and other greenspaces, but many of our communities—especially lower-income and majority non-white communities—struggle to see any of the usual ecosystem benefits. By fostering a deeper connection to the greenspaces we have, helping to make additional greenspaces welcoming and safe for nearby communities, and producing high-quality environmental programming we hope to change this narrative and empower all of Baltimore’s communities.

Birds of Urban Baltimore is a non-profit whose costs, from staff salaries to equipment, are wholly covered by grants and private donations. Please consider donating today, so we can continue to provide quality and professional services to Baltimore’s communities.
